Some people use the words 'facetious' and 'sarcastic' interchangeably, but there is a very subtle difference, and its based entirely on the intent of the speaker.

A facetious statement is generally used lighten the mood, sometimes considered inappropriate, whereas a sarcastic statement is intended to be derogatory.

There are rare occasions where a statement can be both. Consider a situation where you have a roommate that refuses to run the dishwasher. You often have arguments about this. Then one day a massive flood washes your entire apartment into the river. You turn to your friend and say: "Looks like the dishes are finally going to get washed."
