He basically told people they could vote via text message, and apparently almost 5000 people believed him

It isn't a politically correct opinion, but in my opinion the world would be a slightly better place without these tricked voters being able to vote. If you don't spend the basic time to get educated on how voting works, I don't see any reason to believe your opinion on civics or proper government are informed. This means your opinion is literally noise at best and easily-hijacked and manipulated at worst.

Universal suffrage is quite a nice myth and story to peddle the virtues about how great and enlightened your government is. Nothing better for control than good PR and propaganda, after all.

It was nice back in the day when only landowners could vote, because that meant they really had a stake in the election results. Now I wouldn't support that today, but maybe pass a basic civics test and name X number of people running for different offices.
