its big leap going from incessant student of history to larping, dunno if i want to make it but there's a very convenient meeting in a month, i suppose i'll at least walk by and see if it catches my eye.
It's not quite LARPing, although I suppose in a way it is.
There are two main takeaways I would generally want people to make - one is that it covers all kinds of things medieval/early renaissance. So you can do the combat, which draws most people, but you can also do calligraphy, archery, brewing, blacksmithing, sewing - if it was done then, you can do it in the SCA.
And the second is regarding the combat itself, since LARPing tends to give some connotations, good or bad. The combat is all actual competition. There really aren't re-creations, or anything like that. Generally when you step in to fight, you're legitimately competing within the rules of the organization.
Which is what I primarily did, focusing on Rapier almost my whole time in the SCA. But I also did a little bit of chorus too. So it's not all blood and guts. :p
its live, theres action, roles are being played, it may not be throwing balls that represent thunderbolts but its larping to anyone not very involved lol
that meeting will be somewhere i would probably be anyway, though, so hey, maybe it'll make me really interested and you'll wonder at the next event if that new guy is fluffy enough to be fluf
The SCA has been one of the most rewarding things I've ever done in my life. I've gained great friends, learned a lot, and had some of my sweatiest, most enjoyable times participating in its events.
I found this report while watching some old battles on Youtube, and wanted to share it with you guys.
