We have never been to court over custody. All important decisions are discussed and then solutions are found, without a meditator. We both have certain dates throughout the year that are our "days" with the kid. No discussion needed, we know she's spending all spring break at my place, and we know she gets her in August for their annual camping trip.

Seeing this shit just breaks my heart, because I know the pain of not seeing your kid everyday, and I get to see her in a fair and balanced joint custody. I couldn't imagine the pain of being alienated from your children.

End of rant. I'm pretty drunk.
