The pilots began noticing the objects after their 1980s-era radar was upgraded
I've not given much thought to the "advanced aquatic race" theory, but I like the ring of it. And at least they wouldn't be extraterrestrial invaders.

What I found interesting was apparently since modern radar was used the jets have been seeing these things since the 1980s. Could this be some advanced aquatic race, or aliens? It could be military tech but if it goes back to the 1980s that seems too advanced and also too hard to hide for that amount of time.
