If he didn't have it, he'd be asking for trouble. I can see some nut job wanting to make a name for himself trying to harm him. It would also look very bad for us as a country to allow him to be harmed.
I suppose there is no commandment that you must live above the level of a typical American, but everybody would be just as impressed if he were to live in an upper-middle class suburban home (no need for an Obama $8.7 million mansion) instead of a below-average home.
