Cereal sales dropped 5% from 2009 to 2014, despite the fact that more Americans are eating breakfast than ever before.

Blaming millenials has become a marketing tactic, tastes have changed rapidly with the internet and plethora of food based programming, people see new things and want to try them which means they don't eat miracle whip or cornflakes etc.. everyday.

The real reasons cereal sales have dropped:

  1. Americans are more health conscious: All the good cereals are full of sugar and marshmallows, they want their kids to eat healthier so parents are opting to give fruit in non-looped form to their kids.

  2. Gluten free/Anti-Carb Movements: adults have cut lots of grains out of their diets which is bad for cereal makers

  3. Faster culture/more options: Look at the rise in variety/sales of items like protein/nutrition bars/shakes and even just yogurt, already portioned and can be eaten on the way to work. Actually taking the time to sit down and eat breakfast consumes time a lot of people would rather be sleeping during.

All the good cereals are full of sugar and marshmallows

I don't understand why there is such a failure to make cereal that is not pumped full of sugar. The only cold cereal I eat on occasion is plain shredded wheat, but I normally instead have no-sugar-added muesli or oats when I need a quick breakfast.

Sugar addiction. Almost all packaged and prepared foods are packed with sugar, and once you stop eating it, it becomes way too sweet, but while you are addicted you need the sugar or else it tastes bland. Your breakfast sounds like a great choice BTW.
