I am getting heart surgery in a week and I'm starting blood thinners tomorrow to prepare for the surgery. I'll be on those for at least 3 months following the surgery. My last beer was one of my old favorites - Bell's Two Hearted. I had already cut out all caffeine over a month ago, and I just had to have one last beer. I'm getting surgery for a generic atrial fibrillation (a-fib) issue that has only stared hitting me about 3 months ago, but has been getting progressively worse by the day. I'm super looking forward to the surgery that will be cauterizing veins going from my lungs into my left atrium to stop the random feeling of fainting when my heart rate suddenly goes to 170+ bpm while sitting idle. My dad has the same issue, but he doesn't feel it. His mom and several of her nephews died of heart issues around my age.

Have any of you had a "last beer" experience?

Oh, many times. I was, for lack of a better phrase, a pretty avid alcohol drinker and I had lots of last drinks. I finally cut it out of my life and kept it that way for quite a while - until I learned to use functionally again.

Good luck with your surgery and I don't know if your type of surgery requires physical therapy afterwards, but if it does then it is good to go into that knowing it is a lot of work - or at least that is my understanding.
