Every Tuesday we'd go to underground hip-hop clubs/events in a shit part of Long Beach. The music was great, but every single time we left there was some shit going on that had cops literally fighting people or pulling black chicks to the ground by their hair to arrest them. I saw some pretty interesting stuff.

The photography led to her doing several photoshoots for album covers for the performers. I distinctly remember doing one in Compton on a Sunday in front of the courthouse. If you've never been to Compton, people just loiter everywhere. There were 3 different groups at the courthouse alone and a few others nearby. How was a single white guy like me going to protect this little Asian girl taking pictures? Simple. I sparked a cigarette and handed out the rest of the pack to the 10+ people who asked to bum one. One guy came back for thirds, one guy riding his bike stopped and asked for one. That $5 pack kept everyone happy. It was weird but effective for what I was supposed to do.

Carrot and the stick. I've done similar in rough areas but at the end of the day diplomacy doesn't always work and it's better to be prepared. I'm friendly and sociable towards everyone. I'm not so naive that I expect that behavior to be returned. There is no sin in self-defense or defense of those you care about. Protecting oneself allows them to defend others. It's the obligation of every good person to avoid such confrontations when possible. May I suggest adding starburst candy to your repertoire. It's amazing how easily you can disarm others by simply telling them what you're up to and being friendly. Also dress for your surroundings. Bling aint nothing but a bullseye when you're the odd man out.

I drove my little 2007 Hyundai Tiburon right into Compton and parked it right in front of the courthouse. That was a really good cheap sports car, but it looked far more expensive. I made sure I was seen walking out of it. That was the bling I wore, and I'm still here so maybe that worked
