this is a training video at one of the Fort McKay oil sites. They show you this in site orientation. You cannot out-run a bear and they make that clear. They also have bear snaps which sound like gun fire to ward off bears...

I've had my share of black bear experiences- people that live around them know to give them a wide berth.
