I'm old school. I have a PC without a mic or video camera. I'm not into phones ... so no smart phone to worry about. But I would tape them over if I did.

My main computer does not have either. It stays connected to VPN.

My laptop has those drivers deleted. It stays connected to VPN.

My phone doesn't stay anywhere near what I'm doing to pick anything up. It stays connected to VPN.

My backup phone has a firewall that I've installed. Nothing gets in or out until I approve it. It has, so far, been 100% effective. All the same, it remains connected to a VPN account full time.

My tablet has the same firewall and VPN.

I have a raspberry pi google assistant that I built and programmed with a custom sound so that I know when it's listening after it supposedly detects the keyphrase. Youtube never sets it off. Music never sets it off. Talking amongst people never sets it off. But television shows, even shows from the 90s, does. However, there's a programmatic filter in place that detects if it's background noise or me talking to it. That filter is 100% accurate. The fact that television shows (not even movies, just TV shows) sets it off indicates that there's a hidden sound we cannot hear but it does that has been broadcast for decades for various purposes.

Your smrt TV remote likely has a mic, too.

Why does Apple hide their mics? Makes me wonder when cameras will be behind the screen, if not already.

Most of my systems do not have a mic or camera.
My laptop does, so it has tape over the camera.

Only my phone looks at and listens to me.

Forgot about my laptop - LOL. But I rarely use it. Will have to think about tape now, thanks.

There is no point in disabling your mic if you carry a smartphone.

This. My wife has the Facebook app on her phone (I don't FB). Several times we have seen ads pop up about what we were discussing.

When the director of the FBI [dufos that he was] has a hunk of tape over his laptop camera in an FBI office no less you should follow suit.

Get made fun of for my flip-phone all the time.

I used to. I realized some time ago that the worst they're going to see is me rubbing one out, so I decided to take it off. It was ugly anyway...bright blue square of duct tape over the camera and mic. I can't imagine a thin piece of tape does much to block out sound, anyway.
