I don't agree with the saying you don't get respect till you earn it. I prefer to I treat others as I wish to be treated myself. There are some things you will have to earn like trust or admiration though.

This could also come down to how people define respect as well though.

to some degree, giving respect is breathing life into the relationship.

unfortunately, for some folks, with vitriol and poison, they breath death and suffering into the relationship

Respect is very different than manners. People often rarely see the difference these days. Yes Sir/Mam, Please, Thankyou, etc. It takes very little to be civil even when you're being critical of someone. Respect should be earned. Giving it unconditionally leads to crap like this:
