is apparently a largely American activity, and a recent one

No, it used to be a part of every day life. We were told that as consumers, we didn't need to repair or reuse everything. That we didn't need to have something for every occasion. That all we needed to do was just go out and buy another.

It's a traditional value. Republicans tend to be the party of tradition (or at least say that they are) and right now, being republican is fashionable. It's always easier to buy gear than adjust your knowledge and practices.

I don't think any of the preppers I know do it for a traditional reason, nor do any republicans I know consider themselves traditional? I don't know if this is a popular stereotype, but my experiences haven't led this to being the case. Even your note about being republican being fashionable, I've been led to believe the opposite is true. But I dunno, I guess social circles change things.

I wouldn’t say that they are doing it for the sake of tradition but it is nevertheless human tradition.

Ah that makes more sense. I took that in a different way. Yeah definitely something people were doing a thousand years ago and will be doing in another thousand years.
