I read an EU official's comment that even if sites are current offline in the EU they could still be found out of compliance as those companies have previously collected and are storing EU user data.

Seems like a huge over reach if true.

US loves to do global rules that apply anywhere in the world too, so it is only time the EU plays the same game.

Granted, but that sounds like it's bordering on an ex post facto law, which the US is theoretically incapable of passing.
