The entire story is designed to slam Trump and make excuses for Obama....

Obama was a stickler for rules

Trump’s dangerous disregard of constitutional norms.

If Trump walked on water they'd say he couldn't swim.

Yeah I generally have a distaste for Vox and their highly biased poor writing however this article was a bit more thorough with the Jack Johnson stories than others I saw.

But he never did, perhaps in part because black America has traditionally had somewhat mixed feelings about Johnson as a civil rights icon

I see this as a dodgy cop-out, it's likely he was not embraced as a civil rights icon because he was long dead before the civil rights era and would have been overshadowed by the more politically outspoken fighters of time (Mohamed Ali for example). Also Johnson was far more akin to modern athletes who are all about showing off, living beyond their means, and generally bad behavior.

Of course the pardon is deserved regardless of the related political motives
