A friend of mine's cousin just helped bust an ongoing scam. Apparently the local gas station was shaving a dime off any cash transactions they made when they handed back the change. He'd been noticing that he regularly had to correct any change he got back for a while. He told the police about it as it was happening way too frequently. They apparently regularly sent in undercover officers to buy stuff here and there until it became a more serious crime. These asshats thought they'd steal a dime here and there. The officers volunteered their time and bought stuff they wanted. The store owner now has a felony. I don't know about all the legalese but I want to believe I guess. Supposedly these idiots thought they'd get away with a ton of small crimes b/c people rarely count their change.
The department supposedly used some of their funds to repay the missing dimes here and there as the investigation went on. After a couple years they busted these asshats for a serious crime. I've got my doubts. Like I said though. I want to believe.

It would be fantastically ironic if the sentence was 10 years.
