Is there a certain amount of phuks I need to receive?
Someone in another thread said that the levels follow a square law. My own analysis of user scores shows that a polynominal fits the data almost exactly.
So what are the exact conditions required?
It's a square root. You'll need more XP the higher level you are.
You can calculate how much XP you need to reach a level with (level^2)*10
for the sleepy or mathmatically uninterested:

This needs to be sticky prominently somewhere I feel.
also is the XP needed to get a new level constant or does the amount of XP you need to level up also go up as you get higher up the ladder?
