I had a friend try this in Gr8.
We got a new student. A muslim, who was exempted from having to sing the anthem, and then read from the bible. At that time we didn't know what a Muslim was. None of us had ever met one.
Yes, it was a long time ago, the school day started with the anthem and a short bible reading. There were no Muslims or black people. We weren't all white though. Lots of asians, indians(dot), and indians(feather).
Anyway, when my friend saw that the new student was allowed to go out in the hall and play while we went through the indoctrination, he got thinking.
The next day he can in with a letter, signed by his dad, that said he had joined the Satanic church, so was not longer able to sing the anthem, or read from the bible.
It didn't work. But during the ensuing fallout, it was pointed out that the anthem was not religious, and if the Muslim student refused to sing, the student would not be allowed to benefit from this nation while spitting on it.
After sitting out of school for a week, the Muslim family gave in. That student had to sing the anthem, but was still exempt from bible reading.
