We typically (but not always) have that here (US).
Lots of places offer free shipping if you get the slow version, but then you can pay some to get it fast.
For instance my wife wanted an Alex 9-drawer from IKEA, but the nearest IKEA to us is in Houston (about 3 and a half hour drive). We thought about shipping it, but the shipping literally cost the same as the thing itself; so we drove out to the place and got it. A lot cheaper, and it was a fun trip, too.
Shipping here is pretty quick so unless you need the thing tomorrow, there is no point in paying for it. Occasionally I will get something from the US that takes a lifetime to arrive, but not often.
I feel sorry for @Jambo. Australian shipping must suck.
Whatever it was must have weighed a tonne! :D
