I've been using the same desktop for almost 10 years now.
It was top of the line when I got it, and overclocked, with a custom compiled kernel. So it did a good job of lasting. But it is very very slow by todays standards, and no tricks to squeeze out more speed are going to help any more.

I just dropped $3000 for a new custom system though. It will be an i7-6700k! all a-list parts, and a solid state drive. It's gonna be crazy.

But I have to wait a couple/few weeks for all the parts to get in. Busy time of year and all.

I can't fucking wait.

Geforce gtx1080 turbo 8G video card
Liquid cooling
Asus z170-a motherboard
32 gig corsair ddr4-2666 ram
Corsair force 240g solid state drive
3T Seagate Barracuda platter drive

It wasn't built to be a gmaing machine. But it can handle that too.
It is going to make compiling and 3d rendering/editing a whole lot more fun.

Nice parts list.

Seems like a pretty big markup though. That's about ~$1500 worth of parts, give or take a bit (depending on type/extent of water cooling, case, PSU, etc).

Canadian coins, and there are other things on the list, like a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.
Those were just the highlights.

All in all it'd be top of the normal range, or bottom of the upper echelon.
Coming from an almost 10 year old build, it's going to be nice.

When you include the monitor, case, keyboard, etc. and realise that I paid with Canadian loonies, the price was actually pretty good.

I tried to build it for myself using his parts. If he had to get the monitor and keyboard/mouse. $3k makes sense. Building a computer in Canada is expensive right now.

I upgraded my potato on January with all the mildly decent parts that I could find while still being able to eat on the following months. Am very happy with this thing and I don't regret it.

It's likely a bearing in one of your fans going out and not actually your pc making the noise, but I can only speculate as I don't know what noise.

Yeah it is my fan. It is impossible to actually get inside to to take a look at it though.

I need a new one anyway because it was not great when I got it and I've had it for 3-4 years now.

Mine started doing that a couple years back.
But after I kicked it, out of frustration, it stopped the noises.

Sometimes you just need to let them know who's in charge. I got another 3 years, and it's still going.
