A couple of years ago I had an idea about time travel that has stuck with me ever since. I can't remember exactly how it came about, but I remember reading about nano technology and it got me thinking about how physical surveillance is going to work in the future. Technology seems to be going through a trend where stuff is getting smaller and smaller, and I think that this will apply to drones one day. My theory is this:

  • Nanodrone technology will become possible.
  • The drones will be able to scan and map out the surrounding environment in the same way that a self driving car does, or perhaps through cameras.
  • These drones will be connected to the internet through some form of meshnet, and upload the data they collect back to a centralised location.
  • Using this data, it will become possible to map out cities, perhaps even in realtime.
  • Once the data has been collected, it can be stored and accessed again later.
  • Using VR technology, it will become possible to "time travel" back to any point in time after the data started being stored.

After reading an article about a patent troll earlier, I wondered if time travel had been patented. It turns out that it has been patented, though not in the form I just described.

Here is the patent, belonging to a Marlin B. Pohlman. It describes a very specific form of technology, which is odd considering that the only reason you would patent time travel at this point is to make a very broad definition and squat on it so you can cash in later when someone makes something that fits your description. Some of the wording in the patent made me remember something.

At this point, I should briefly explain the story of John Titor.

Between 2000 and 2001, several posts were made on bulletin boards by someone calling themselves John Titor. He claimed to be a time traveller from the 2030s, and discussed the future very elaborately, apparently leading some people to believe that what he said was true. People have since claimed responsibility for the posts, but nobody knows who it was, and it is thought that he was multiple people due to some inconsistencies between posts on different boards (leading some people to theorise that John Titor was multiple versions of himself, because he switched into a different timeline after he made the first posts, and consequently the future changed).

The patent is basically exactly how time travel was described by John Titor. I was interested in the owner of this patent, so I looked him up.

Marlin B. Pohlman is the chief architect for Oracle's Protected Enterprise Technology Business Unit, and is one of the primary educators worldwide on Identity Management.

This surprised me, I thought he would be some random crazy. Then I looked at the rest of the results.

On March 14, 2013 a man named Marlin Pohlmann was arrested at Portland International Airport in the U.S. State of Oregon and charged with several sex crimes.

He is accused of drugging the four separate women with LSD, ecstasy, even kidnapping and raping women.

Pohlmann is thought to have used a syringe filled with chemicals that are not known to disable his victim. After police entered his home they found the emergency medicine laboratory which seems to have a large collection of unidentified chemicals.

In online writings, he claims that an experimental cancer drug he took dramatically increased his mental acuity.

He claims he used the increased brain power to study time travel and patent a time machine.

My mental state is similar to that of a man who used his experimental cancer brain powers to dose women with LSD and rape them.

as time continues to pass, john titor's timeline seems more and more like a relief compared to ours.
