We cannot rank people from best to worst, good to bad, deserving to undeserving, it's too complex and we're too stupid. If God exists that's his job.

It's natural to adopt a default position that all humans should be considered equal in the highest sense, and make some simple practical laws to discourage us from mistreating one another.

Probably the best way to go about it.

We might find reasonable ways to judge and "rate" people in our own lives (Alice is a hard worker, while Bob is kinda lazy, so I might be willing to give Alice a break and help her out because of that), but in terms of public policy, all lives should basically be treated equally unless someone poses some kind of threat to society.

Take a dozen random people with different backgrounds, cultures, religious beliefs, values, and professions, and they all share an equal right to life, and equal right to live how they choose, and an equal right to not be forced or coerced into doing things against their will.

EDIT: Not speaking of economic inequality, just equality of opportunity, I suppose.
