Anecdotal:
Back in 1989 or 1990 I was in the gym hanging from the pull-up bar. Sweats, t-shirt, long hair in a ponytail.
(I was in a rock band, don't judge!)
A guy comes up to me with a flirty, "Hey there..." and sees I'm a guy. He apologizes and says something like, "I saw the long hair and thought you were a chick." I replied with, "No problem. I heard your tone of voice and thought you were a fag."
We had a laugh and that was it.
Now I'm thinking, good thing he wasn't a Turkish cleric...

When i had long hair and was clean shaven an arab taxi driver speaking broken english said "have a nice day miss" and I was taken aback...poor lads overseas. No culture awareness. Haven't a basic clue from a white woman and goodlooking men in kilts. - Canada. And fook yoo.
