proper ventilation is also an issue that at least my dad overlooked when he built his house. all the vents are on the floor and are underpowered and the ceilings are high. any time they spend considerable time cooking anything, there is a very distinct temperature gradient that develops. a foot or two off the floor is freezing and it steadily warms up to uncomfortably warm at the head and getting kinda hot if you raise your hand. on the plus side, laying down on the new carpeting after a meal there is greeeeeat.

One of my former roommates and his entire family used to lay on the floor after a big dinner. They absolutely loved it. It just always seemed like a strange habit to me

I hate open plan houses but this isn't a legitimate argument. The cost of renewable energy is dropping at a breakneck pace, significantly faster than the increase in energy usage in developing countries. Already some areas are struggling to offload the excess energy they don't need.

Open plan houses are retarded though. I LIKE having rooms in my house. It's nice.
