I'm pretty sure that when she said 'Under the thumb' she was confusing it with 'Rule of thumb'.
Also I'm pretty sure she was misinformed about the origin of 'uppity'. It was definitely used the way she describes. But I believe it originated as a general term for anyone who was trying to act above their station.

But that really doesn't change the points made in the discussion.

She makes up origin stories for all kinds of behaviors. Her last one was all over the place too.
