Right, so, with that out of the way, I'll start by saying I went into watching this movie expecting/hoping it would be around a 4, mayyybe 5 out of10. I mean, a Steven Spielberg blockbuster about gaming with memberberries sprinkled around? How could Hollywood possibly get that right? But at least it'll look pretty and maybe it'll put me to sleep...
The first 10 or so minutes, before the plot really starts, there is a brief glimmer of hope that maybe this will be better than I had hoped. I like dystopian futures and eating those delicious memberberries. For the next two hours you get to watch cliché after cliché after cliché after... wait, I already said that. Well, you get to see an extraordinarily predictable storyline that seems to shove plot holes in your face with clumsy, cringe-y dialogue, modern political overtones and cartoon characters who have no development aside from the protagonist who gets a very standard coming-of-age treatment.
I just... I don't know... I think it may have been the worst movie I've ever seen. I can't even figure out who the target audience is supposed to be. The general vibe of the film is that it was made for 11 year olds but what 11 year old gives a shit about 99% of the memberberries? Were they just for the parents in the audience? It seemed like it was being marketed toward ~30 year olds... Whatever...
3/10 because I managed to watched the whole thing.
I should add that in addition to plot holes there are also actual holes in the plot. Like a scene will finish where something needs to be done to move on and the next scene that's already been done and we're off to our next adventure. I don't know if there were parts that were deemed not exciting enough so they cut them but I had to check the time at the end to make sure I had actually watched the whole thing.
