This is a pretty spun headline. Bail has been roundly abused by the police, keeping people on bail for months or years. Legislation was necessary to stop this abuse of police powers.

Yeah but this is releasing a lot of people straight back into the community without conditions? Sure sounds scary if you were one of the people who was a victim of crime. How can you balance the needs of both better than a blanket release.

The people "released" have not been convicted of any crime, merely arrested on suspicion of one. Innocent until proven guilty is an important tenet of UK law. Bail should only be used while a suspected crime is investigated.
