The scheme has been nicknamed the Azerbaijani Laundromat. Confidential banking records were leaked to the Danish newspaper Berlingske and shared with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), the Guardian, and other media partners. The data covers a 30-month period. It may show the tip of an iceberg.
If they only just discovered this, you can bet that it isn't an isolated incident.
I didn't realize Azerbaijan still had that spending power. They do not have oil money anymore, that dried up. They have been in a persistent indirect war with Russia and Armenia in Nagorno-Karabakh (landlocked post-soviet frozen conflict zone in their county) for decades, which keeps ramping up. Azerbaijan recently bought several billion in missile defence systems from Israel.
Where is that money coming from?
(Sauce: me being Ukraine and Russia in MP and researching the shit out of this)
