CA did that around 2017 or so. Basically if you don't have an EZ Pass you just violate the toll and go pay it online within 7 days or so and then you are fine. It actually worked out pretty well, except for when you forget to pay the toll because you don't have that whole toll booth stop anymore.

The super annoying thing is that getting a transponder to avoid online payments in CA incurred minimum monthly usage or you hit a fee. I would only use the toll roads in the winter when I would hit up the mountains for snowboarding. If I did the FasTrak it would charge me the rest of the months I didn't use it, which is pretty retarded.

I hate how it's phrased as COVID bullshit. It was never about that; it was just an excuse to eliminate cash.
