There's several similar symbols that all have unique meanings. A Maltese cross for instances must have 16 points, one for each of the Knights who defended the island fortress (Or something like that, it's been 13 years since I learned about it).
But yeah, with the rounded sides, it should never have been mistaken after a single google search.

One glance I saw it as a fire department type cross with it's rounded arms. But I agree, we all see and hear what we want to see and hear, there's no disputing that and we can all be guilty of such. Someone whose job is to fact check though, should be extremely careful when filling in the blanks and commenting.
