One glance I saw it as a fire department type cross with it's rounded arms. But I agree, we all see and hear what we want to see and hear, there's no disputing that and we can all be guilty of such. Someone whose job is to fact check though, should be extremely careful when filling in the blanks and commenting.
There's several similar symbols that all have unique meanings. A Maltese cross for instances must have 16 points, one for each of the Knights who defended the island fortress (Or something like that, it's been 13 years since I learned about it).
But yeah, with the rounded sides, it should never have been mistaken after a single google search.
Yup, a common symbol used throughout human history by many folks representing many meanings.
It does resemble an Iron cross. Can't really deny that. But this journalist should have done at least 5 more minutes of fact checking before hitting "send".
I myself have had a few weird conversations in the past, one that included a teacher and the principal in high school, as I used to wear a Maltese cross medallion during my teen years. Some people see what they want to see, or are simply ignorant that there's similar looking symbols also in use.
