Whilst this does sound sketchy on the surface, I'll play devil's advocate.

There is clearly a benefit to knowing who is actually a journalist and who isn't. I bet it would be trivial to pose as a journalist and get into a lot of places that you definitely should not be able to get into. I can't recall if the guy was posing as a journalist or something else, but can you remember when someone snuck into some kind of press conference with Bernie Sanders and nobody even noticed he was there despite him sitting three feet away from Sanders?
