holy rant, batman

the problem is public mistrust of the police and the government. a good leader addresses the problem, marching more police through the streets is an effective short term solution but is only a bandaid until real police reform is achieved. increased accountability, a national registry for complaints on officers, a mechanism to investigate problem officers and charge them or prevent them from being rehired, increased pay and benefits to attract a better workforce, ever more training to limit the use of lethal force and reviews of policies to eliminate policies that are used in an unfair way against people of color. what the reform will look like and how it will work, who knows, but it needs to happen if there is any hope of ending these riots. it definitely won't satisfy everyone but it will clear out most if not all of the legitimate protesters.

it looks like they are claiming that because there was a knife within reach of jacob blake, he was in possession of it and therefor lethal force was necessary. from what i understand, which is not much, this will probably hold up in court. that policy is used heavily and almost exculsively against people of color around here. its a good policy for being able to charge people in a car with drugs rather than having to let them all go free but its not a policy that should be applied to this case in my opinion. to me, unless he is lunging at the officer with the knife, there is no reason to shoot him. that is part of the risk of being an officer, placing your life on the line to protect the community, including those you are arresting, and they should be paid accordingly.

True, although it's really hard to take "Defund the Police" seriously as long as they're making police presence necessary.

a national registry for complaints on officers

It's internal state affairs; I'm not sure Congress can stretch the Interstate Commerce Clause that far.

a mechanism to investigate problem officers and charge them or prevent them from being rehired

We have these things. Internal Affairs and HR departments. I agree they don't work all that well, but to my knowledge nobody has ever really solved the "Who Watches the Watchman" problem in a satisfactory, stable manner.

increased pay and benefits to attract a better workforce, ever more training to limit the use of lethal force

Not exactly on board with the Defund message, eh?

reviews of policies to eliminate policies that are used in an unfair way against people of color.

That is entirely on the officer. Every policy can be used unfairly against anyone.

he was in possession of it and therefor lethal force was necessary.

There are a couple stills of him holding a small knife as he's walking away from officers, who have their guns out after wrestling them off him. He then walks to the van and reaches inside at which point he is shot. As far as I'm concerned this was a failed suicide-by-cop.

those were the demands before some idiots started the defund the police slogan. how they can be achieved i dont know or care but they have to be achieved or something like them if we want the unrest to end.
