Anyone know why locomotives weren't designed with the cabin in front of the engine? It would seem pretty easy to do by simply reversing the design, but visibility would be greatly improved.

Shoveling coal into the engine, I'd guess.

It's diesel-electric though. Sure, for the old coal engines that makes sense, but did nobody bother to update the design after moving away from coal shovelers? Modern diesel engines still look like this. Is this really 100 years of tradition as inertia?
