I remember reading several years ago that they were planning to end the series after wrapping up the Blue Morpho story arc, but they had some arcs that weren't resolved so they kept going for it and kept making great content.

Spoiler: [Seriously, and leaving the show to end with the Monarch finally reaching level 10, then instantly learning he is blood related to Dr. Venture and I think that last episode ended with Hank wandering off as The Bat not long after learning his brother slept with his girlfriend.](#spoiler) There was so much setup for another season.
