Guus was a legendary coach, Real Madrid, Chelsea, we nearly won the WC in 98' under his charge as well. But he seemed to old and out of touch to bring energy into a group of younger players this time. Something Van Gaal actually accomplished and led the team to the 3rd spot on WC only months before with basically the same group.
The fact that he resigned only a half year after and Blind for some reason automatically took over. This was in the contract to happen after the 2016, when Blind would be promoted from Assistant for some unknown reason. About the dodgiest thing to happen in Dutch national football coaching since Blind was only headcoach for 224 days prior at his short and dissapointing Ajax spell.
He hasn't called up Van Persie and barely plays Huntelaar for example. They might not be in form but ffs they are better then De Jong or any of the fuckers he's been playing on a bad day.
I actually think that Gus Hiddink is an outstanding coach who can work true miracles - when he is in the right place at the right time. The guy has a knack for being given free reign over a downtrodden backwater team under unprofessional management and transforming it within months from laughing stock into a serious contender, as he did with South Korea and Russia.
With the Elftal there was neither much he could improve with his methods, nor had he as much elbow space to change things as he had in Korea and Russia. In that position he was like a great white shark deployed in desert warfare.
