[The following takes place following the capitulation of France to Nazi Germany in World War II.]

The next morning three soldiers escorted the journalists through the rubble of the town, past the church where the civilians lay buried. They encountered an old woman digging through a pile of bricks, and they shouted at her to move on. When she didn’t, one of the soldiers approached her while holding his rifle. Shirer heard her say to the soldier, “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?” He felt a keen embarrassment and pity for the woman, as he translated her words – “Would you like to sleep with me tonight?” He could imagine her remembering life in the town during the 1914-1918 war; now it was repeating itself.
