Hoess [Rudolph Hoess, Commandant at Auschwitz] mentioned this in his autobiography, which he wrote while he was in a Warsaw prison in 1947, saying:

I noticed that women who either guessed or knew what awaited them nevertheless found the courage to joke with the children to encourage them, despite the mortal terror visible in their own eyes. One woman approached me as she walked past and, pointing to her four children who were manfully helping the smallest ones over the rough ground, whispered, “How can you bring yourself to kill such beautiful, darling children? Have you no heart at all?”

…I remember, too, a woman who tried to throw her children out of the gas chamber, just as the door was closing. Weeping, she called out, “At least let my precious children live.”

There were many such shattering scenes, which affected all who witnessed them.

Wow, that is really intense.

Also I never knew you had such a wide presence online. I don't visit reddit much so I didn't know you started there. This is the first I'm hearing of your patreon and I can say that if I had extra bucks I'd support you. Im particularly interested in that podcast with your wife! Sounds really fun.

Keep up the work, Locke.

Thanks! It's hard to find time to do the research, but I'm making it happen when I can.
