[The following is in relation to one of the victims of the Roman Emperor Claudius Caesar’s fourth wife, Agrippina the Younger.]
Not one to rest on her laurels, Agrippina also made certain that everyone, but in particular her rivals, knew how much influence she now wielded. Lollia Paulina was just such a case. The third wife of the Emperor Caligula, she was a noted beauty and had been a rival with Agrippina for Claudius’s hand in marriage. Agrippina therefore loathed Lollia Paulina and consequently she plotted her downfall, eventually deciding that the best course of action was to accuse Paulina of having consulted with astrologers and magicians, as well as the ‘Clarian Apolla’, regarding the imperial marriage. On hearing the charges Claudius, rather than questioning the accused as to whether the story was true, instead went straight to the Senate and stated that Lollia Paulina had evil designs on the state. Agrippina’s plan had worked beautifully. The Senate, horrified to hear Claudius’s accusations, immediately confiscated all of Lollia Paulina’s property and had her sent into exile, where she was forced to take her own life.
