[The following is from the Civil War diary of Samuel Clear, a Union soldier.]

Saturday, March 18th

The weather continues good. We was on Brigade Drill to day. Genl Miles our division Genl put us through several bogus bayonet charges. In the dusk of the Evening Co “K” presented Captain Weltner with a nice new sword. We payed One Hundred and twenty Dollars for it. The Captain was taken by surprise as we had not let him know that we were contemplating anything of the kind. We sent to his quarters requesting him to come to the Company Street. Orderly Sergeant James E. Jolliff made the presentation speech. The Captain responded in a Soldier like manner. Thanking us for our gift promising us never to disgrace it or the members of the Company.

He never did. He was with us until Lee Surrendered, and died very shortly after the war closed.
