[The following is from the Civil War diary of Samuel Clear, a Union soldier.]
Friday, Sept 2nd
At 12 O’Clock to day our Division was called out to see a man shot for desertion, we formed as is usually done upon such occasions in a hollow square. His grave had been dug. They sit him on the end of his coffin, a file of Provo Guards (twelve men) with one of their 12 guns loaded with a blank cartridge let him have the other Eleven and soon fixed him.
