At the war’s end Frank Crozier found Margot, the pretty waitress at his favourite hotel in Boulogne, in floods of tears. Although, she said, she had ‘loved and been loved by many British officers during the hectic days’ she had fallen deeply in love with ‘a good-looking young British officer, son of a noble house, who – having slept with her on many occasions – promised to marry her.’

She had just been jilted, and that very night she shot herself with a German pistol given her as a souvenir by a colonel.
