One Swedish officer named Karl Gustav Tornquist, who was serving with the French navy in the area at the time [during the American Revolution], reported that at one beautiful estate, the floor of one room was covered with the broken pieces of plaster figurines. In their place in the cupboard were five human heads. While in a nearby room, “a pregnant woman was found murdered in her bed through several bayonet stabs. The [assumedly British] barbarians had opened both of her breasts and written above the bed canopy: ‘Thou shalt never give birth to a rebel.’ ”

The baby had been ripped from her womb and was found outside hanging from a tree.
