[The following is taken from a memoir of Irmgard A. Hunt, who grew up in the mountains under Hitler’s Eagles Nest during the Second World War.]

It took the [Allied] pilots a mere forty-five minutes to drop their load [bombs]. However, given the relatively small size of our valley, and the dreadful sounds that engulfed us even in the cellar, we fully expected that the entire valley had been laid to waste.

Where was the tack, tack, tack of the [German] antiaircraft guns, and why was Obersalzberg no longer shrouded in the usual acrid fog [a chemical fog used by the Germans during air raids which prevented the Allies from properly sighting their targets]?

The answer was simple: The chemicals for the fog had run out weeks ago; the guns had run out of ammunition and, perhaps, the soldiers to fire them.
