[The following is in regards to the First World War. At the time that the war had broken out, an explorer named Shackleton, had made an expedition to the Antarctic. When he was later rescued, this was one of his first questions.]

At the other end of the world, Shackleton had reached South Georgia Island after two years’ isolation in Antarctica:

’Tell me, when was the war over?’ I asked.

’The war is not over,’ he answered. ‘Millions are being killed. Europe is mad. The world is mad.’
