People need to remember that they are not the customers of social media, they are the product being sold, a sale of which they have absolutely no control/knowledge of the purchasing parties and the uses of this information.

That is very much the case with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter unfortunately. Wish more social media companies went ad-free and offered a Pro version of their platform with more features instead like Gab and Minds do. Users of platforms should be the customers, not the products being sold.

People are cheap and lazy.

In fact there are free, privacy-preserving social networks available made by free software enthusiasts who deeply care about privacy, and almost nobody uses those. Maybe because they have no marketing budget and maybe because most people are far too lazy and just sign up for WhatsApp because they heard others talk about it a lot.
