I've heard the argument made that if you have the choice of living in a technologically advanced dictatorship or in a technologically advanced nanny state democracy, the dictatorship is the better choice for the reason that you mentioned: corrupt states tend to be incompetent and incapable of projecting power into your daily life whereas the nanny state will monitor and control what you eat, what you say, whom you associate with, etc.

It's shit like this that makes me gladi moved to Africa. Even if the governments here wanted to implement such a system, they wouldn't be capable of it. And it'd be easy to buy your way out anyway.
