Legal experts mostly agree that what the detectives did was legal, but they question whether it was appropriate.
'Appropriate' is irrelevant. If it can be used as a tool by law enforcement, they will. Maybe the lawmakers should examine it and clarify things.
I don't think I'd be opposed to it, if it required a warrant. But I haven't put much thought into it.
