I shit you not, I used to know really really well an executive from one of the original voting machine companies from around 15+ years ago. Their largest security concern was ensuring none of the machines ever had an external internet connection and that the machines only had a LAN for accumulating the results at each location to then be sent by hand to the state electors. The idea that any of these machines may be connected to the external internet is an instant security flaw. Relying on individual sites required they create paper records that could later be validated.
If these machines ever touch an external network, they are not safe whether or not any remote desktop software is installed.
