very unsure what direction to go.

I'm not a fan of overly calickity keyboards and most quiet mechanical keyboards i've seen seem pretty pricey for just a keyboard. I'm not a fan of dealing with batteries and i worry about latency so it'll probably be wired. in a brief search the best keyboard i found was a gaming one with 'wasd' in a different color as well as some other - egregious in my eyes - design choices.

also, wifi. i'd prefer just a usb but the reviews of every single one i found were pretty bad and my wifi has to travel through a ceiling so I guess i gotta go with a card.

i'd love to hear any recommendations, reviews, or uncalled-for insults.

I'm a fan of the Cerberus I've been using recently.
It has the mechanical 'feel' but no clicky sound. Lights up red or blue which is nice in the dark. Has a bit of weight to it. Feels like you could drop it, or defend yourself, and it wouldn't break.
It is cheeto-proof and impervious to mountain dew. No latancy issues since it has a cord. Not many 'extras', just the basics, lights, and a few typical meta keys along the top.
I got mine for free, but it's usually mid range price I think.

Answering the real questions.

but is it maple syrup proof? that's what killed my laptop's keyboard...

i'm really not into the overthetop gaming style keyboards but i don't think i would feel like this guy using that. i'll have to think on it.

I would assume it can handle syrup, thought that may be harder to clean.
I was never into gaming keyboards either. In past I would always go for something simple, cheap, and wireless. I'm not a gamer, so latency doesn't matter to me. Key layout was the only thing I cared about.

But I got a Cerberus free, so tried it out. It is very durable, and the back lighting is more helpful than I expected, so I kept using it. Still do.
I wouldn't worry about your image. Nothing could ever make someone as cool as the hero in your link.
